With that in mind, a lot of our Over 3.5 betting advice will be very similar to what we wrote over on Betting Fellow’s Over 2.5 betting guide. What Is Over 3.5 Goals Betting?
As mentioned previously, the Over 3.5 market is the same as Over 2.5, except there’s a higher line of how many goals a match needs for the bet to win. However, in case you’re not familiar with Over/Under markets at all, we’ll start by explaining what Over 3.5 Goals means in betting.
For this type of bet, you’re essentially predicting that the total number of goals scored in a football match will be 4 or more. This total score is the only thing that should interest you with an Over 3.5 bet. Importantly, it does not matter which team scored them, which team won (or if it ended in a draw) or how and when the goals were scored. If the numbers on the scoreboard at the end of a match add up to 4 or more, you’ve won the bet.
Alternatively, you could bet on the final score being lower than 4. However, this is a separate market called Under 3.5 Goals. This market has it’s own article so we won’t talk about it too much here – however, there are obvious parallels between the two. For example, most of the betting tips we provide here can just be applied in reverse.
For now, though, let’s address the number 3.5. It seems strange at first glance because you cannot score half a goal in football. And, as we’ve mentioned, the actual number of goals you need for a winning Over 3.5 bet is 4. There’s a very practical idea about this: the half-point was done to avoid any confusion. If it were called Over 3 Goals, for example, one could easily misinterpret what happens if exactly 3 goals are scored. This way, you can always be sure whether your bet won or not – and the same goes for your bookie.
Also, you’ll notice we only mentioned football betting so far. This market was specifically made for football’s scoring system. After all, betting that there will be more than 3 points in a basketball match wouldn’t be too exciting, right? There are similar Over X markets for other sports, and they all adhere to the same principles. However, for this article, we’ll stick to football.
Why Bet on Over 3.5 Goals?
As you might have guessed, Over 3.5 is not a market you should bet on just every match. Not a lot of football matches end with this many goals, so the bet seems like a long shot. However, there are very good reasons why people bet on them, and we’ll go through some of them.
First, let’s go through some Over 3.5 Goals bet advantages.
- One of the main reasons punters opt for over 3.5 is the long odds. Statistically, the chances of a match confirming Over 3.5 are not great. This is reflected in the great returns you’ll get if you do manage to predict correctly.
- To make matters a little better, this market has a distinct advantage of having a binary result. What does this mean, exactly? Well, an Over 3.5 bet can only win or lose. That means that the statistical chances for your bet winning are 50%. Of course, it’s rarely that high because of the actual odds of the bey and the implied probabilities. However, compare this to a classic 1X2 bet.
- At its heart, this type of bet has a 33% chance of winning because there is always a chance of a draw. Smart betting is all about statistics, so you shouldn’t overlook this fact.
- Another advantage is that Over 3.5 bets have a chance of winning until the very end. Again, let's compare this to a 1X2 bet. If your team is losing by 2 points on half-time, you can't still hope to win in the end. However, there is always a chance of one of the teams scoring some more. An Over 3.5 bet is not over until the match is over.
- Furthermore, there is a chance of the opposite happening. If 4 goals are scored before the match is over, you can relax knowing that there is no way for your bet to fail anymore. This is a nice change compared to most other markets for which things can theoretically be turned around at any point.
Of course, there are also some down-sides to consider. Here are some Over 3.5 goals disadvantages.
- We’ve mentioned it a few times now, but this can’t be stressed enough: Over 3.5 is far from a safe bet. If we don’t take into account low-tier leagues and outlying teams, a very small percentage of matches end with this many goals.
- Figuring out a good Over 3.5 prediction takes a lot of work. Just a glance at the stats is not enough – you’ll have to be prepared to dig through a lot of relevant information.
- Considering the nature of this betting type, they should not be used as anything other than singles. An Over 3.5 Accumulator or multiple is a terrible idea.
How to Bet on Over 3.5 Goals?
There’s not a lot of nuance to how an Over 3.5 Goals bet is placed. As we mentioned earlier, this bet can only win or fail, there aren’t any additional options. As such, if you want to bet on Over 3.5 Goals – just add the bet to your slip, confirm it, and you’re done.
The only thing’s we would add is that you should carefully consider Over 2.5 Goals vs Over 3.5 Goals. Essentially, placing this bet is not a choice between several options – it’s a choice which market you want to be on in the first place. With that in mind, weigh your options carefully. Maybe an Under market would be better for the current situation, for example.
Our point is that you need to be careful about when, why, and how you’re placing an Over 3.5 bet. Which brings us to our next topic.
How to Choose Matches to Bet on Over 3.5 Goals?
Now we’ll further elaborate on what we meant when we said this market requires a lot of research.
Luckily, the information relevant for Over 3.5 is shared with several other markets – not only Over 2.5 and Over 1.5 but also Both Teams to Score.
The first thing you want to look for are, as always, the teams. You’re looking for teams that score often, but whose defence has some issues. In contrast to Over 2.5, you’ll want to push this idea as far as you can. For instance, you’ll want both teams to tick these boxes.
Now you might be wondering – but if it doesn’t matter who scored the goals, why do you need two such teams? Well, for starters, that doubles the chances of the teams scoring or conceding goals. And in a long-odds bet such as Over 3.5, you want to press every advantage.
Furthermore, two such teams lessen the unpredictability of such matches. Every team has good days and bad days. You can’t predict this reliably – but one team’s goal-getters having an off day is significantly more likely than two teams’. If you also take into account that they are playing each other and how this might affect morale, it should be easy to understand our reasoning.
To that end, try to figure out team strategies as well as the statistics. You want aggressive teams, which usually means aggressive formations and a heavy focus on acquiring the best attackers, ideally to the detriment of their defensive line.
Furthermore, records show us that the best teams for Over 3.5 betting rarely come from top-tier or international leagues. You’ll want to look for smaller and lower-profile matches. For example, the best League for Over 3.5 betting in Germany is the Oberliga Bremen. This is the fifth-tier league of the German football league system, one of fourteen of its kind. Like we said: low profile.
As a bonus, such leagues are also great places to hunt for value bets. This fact, combined with the relatively low popularity of this market, means that Over 3.5 value betting is a completely viable approach.
Where to bet on Over 3.5 Goals?
Of course, finding a betting site which even features these minor matches is not that easy – not to mention if you also want decent odds. Picking the best online bookmaker you can has always been important, but we feel that this goes double if Over 3.5 Goals is a market you’re interested in.
If you want to find a betting site to suit your needs, Betting Fellow can help you with that as well. We recommend checking out our best betting sites list, as well as the numerous bookmaker ratings and reviews you can find throughout our website.

Over 3.5 Goals Betting Tips
Now, let’s go over some additional bits of advice that might help you make a good Over 3.5 betting predictions.
For starters, here are some statistics you might want to look up:
- The average number of goals the two teams made throughout the season.
- The percentage of games in which the teams confirmed the Over 3.5 market. Looking up the same for Over 2.5 might be useful as well
- Head-to head stats. For instance, some teams have issues playing against the offensive tactics of another team in the league. These types of weaknesses are what you’re looking to exploit. Ideally, this will be with an otherwise strong team. Such an Over 3.5 Goals opportunity can provide great returns.
Beyond that, we also have some Over 3.5 betting advice which doesn't fit in our previous sections.
Advanced:
- Keep up with team histories and news. You don’t want to end up placing an Over 3.5 Goals bet on a match where the main offensive players are injured.
- Pay attention to the match context. The more important a match is – the more likely a team is to give their best and score often.
- Look up details such as weather and turf conditions. Again, this is a hard type of bet, and you want every advantage you can get.
Over 3.5 Goals Betting Variations
In addition to Over/under 1.5 and 2.5, there are some other markets which include Over 3.5 and are regularly featured with top betting sites.
- Home/Away Win and Over 3.5. This is a combination of a 1X2 bet and an Over 3.5 bet. You need to win both parts if you want a return.
- Over/Under 3.5 and Both Teams to Score. You’re betting that not only will there be more than 4 goals, but that neither team will finish with a score of 0.
Over 3.5 Goals Verdict
So there you have it, that’s pretty much all you need to know about Over 3.5 Goals betting, and then some. We can all agree that this is not a particularly beginner-friendly market and that it carries a lot of risks. But then again, all sports betting does, and it’s up to the punter to manage that risk.
However, having at least some basic knowledge about all the possible options is always a good idea. Over 3.5 is not a type of bet you’ll be making every single day – but when a good opportunity presents itself, a perceptive, patient bettor can profit greatly. So – have patience, keep learning, and good luck!
