Alaves’ performance over the 2019/20 season was a bit of a disappointment for fans of underdogs.
To be frank, the 16th position they secured made a lot of sense from the perspective of traditional analysis. However, the got surprisingly close to a Europa League qualification in 2018/19. Though they dropped the ball towards the end, they displayed an ability to catch opponents completely by surprise.
If we put aside those unexpected factors, though, Deportivo’s prospects don’t seem too bright for 2020/21. At odds of 2.5 on relegation markets, breaking the Top 15 would be considered a success. Still, if you like to keep an eye out for wildcards for La Liga betting, pay attention to Alaves.
Alaves Key Players
The key part of this team’s surprises was their stalwart defence. Based purely on market value, their goalkeeper is the squad’s biggest asset. Fernando Pacheco is well-liked for those clutch saves that turn dangerous situations into memorable victories.
The defensive formation wouldn’t be complete without great backs, though. The Babazorros boast an effective defensive duo of Víctor Laguardia and Rubén Duarte. Their high-press approach has proven to be a tough nut to crack time and time again. This season, they’ll be joined by Benfica’s Tomás Tavares on the left flank.
Coach Pablo Machín further tried to shore up the roster with some interesting loans. For instance, Rodrigo Battaglia in the midfield should improve Alaves’ connecting plays, while Florian Lejeune should offer the defence even more flexibility.
As Basque country based team main rivals for Alaves are Eibar, Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao and Osasuna. Since the supporters of all of these clubs share similar origin, matches between them are seen as an opportunity to promote Basque culture and supporters are sometimes together on the stands and the streets. Besides Basque teams, Alaves developed local rivalry with CD Mirandes, since the Victoria hometown of Alaves and Miranda are just on 30km distance and teams have performed at Segunda B for more than a decade.
The club was founded in 1921 in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country. The most successful year in the club history was 2001 when they reached the final of UEFA Cup competition. Besides that, in 2017 Alavas were just one step away from Copa del Rey trophy, but lost to Barcelona in the final. The blue-whities home matches have played at Mendizorroza stadium which capacity is about 20.000 seats.
