While the Turkish top flight is full of upsets by up-and-coming clubs right now, none of them rose as quickly or as jarringly as Gaziantep.
They earned a promotion from the second flight just 2 seasons ago through the play-offs and can be found topping the table in 2020/21. The season is still in its early stages, of course, but it’s also worth mentioning that they recorded an 8th place finish last season. Not bad for a team that, up until a year or two ago, had the reputation of being a bottom-half second division squad.
The reasons for this upturn are unclear, considering the fact that the chief manager changed every season since 2013/14. That said, in the reality of the Super Lig, an 8th placement is still very far from victory given the traditional dominance of just a handful of clubs.
As such, an outright league win for Gazişehir Gaziantep is priced at 151, with no other option for outright bets.
Gaziantep Key Players
The squad went through a rather thorough rebuilding of almost the entire lineup.
Interestingly, most of the new arrivals are from Romania – which might have something to do with the new coach Marius Sumudica.
More importantly, though, a quick look at the updated roster reveals the approach for the coming 2020/21 Super Lig season: all-out attack. The new players include Alexandru Maxim, an experienced attacking midfielder from the German Mainz side.
Right-winger Kevin Mirallas was also signed in a free transfer. Emulating other Turkish clubs and their young Brazilian strikers, André was also brought in from Porto Alegrense.
Gaziantep have no rivalry with any club that would be of any significance. Despite being from the same city as Gaziantepspor, the rivalry between them only existed for a short spell, a single season in fact, in 2017/18, when Gaziantepspor were relegated from the Super Lig, but they were relegated again at the end of the campaign and the two clubs haven’t met since. Before that, Gaziantepspor had spent almost the entire Gaziantep’s existence in the top flight. Now their roles are reversed, with Gaziantep being the more successful side by far.
Gaziantep Futbol Kulubu were founded in 1988 in the city of Gaziantep, and given that their whole history spans over a period of only 31 years, there’s not much to tell about them yet.
Despite rising very quickly to the TFF 1. Lig (second division), they stayed there for a very long time, only managing to reach the Super Lig this year when they finished fifth in the 1. Lig and played their way through the promotion play-offs.
Given their life has been relatively short so far, it’s not to be held against them that they have no major trophies at this point, nor have they ever come very close to winning one. Their history is yet to be written.
