Genclerbirligi History

The circumstances in which this club was founded make a rather interesting story. In 1923, a group of 13 boys who failed to make the team of their school, called Ankara Erkek Lisesi, got the idea to form their own team and prove to the school how well they could play. With the help of some of their parents, their dream became a reality.

The father of one of them was a member of parliament and his influence was of vital importance. Because the team consisted of school boys, he named the club ‘Youth Union’, Genclerbirligi in Turkish. The father of another was selected as the first club chairman, and the first thing they did was organize a match against the school team, which they won by 3-0 and identified the victory as their team’s spirit.

Between 1923 and 1959 they played in the regional Ankara Football League, which they won a record nine times. They were crowned Turkish football champions in 1941 and 1946, before joining the newly formed Milli Lig, the National League in 1959, today known as the Super Lig.

Since then they’ve had a number of ups and downs, relegations and promotions, and their best achievement remains third place, which they earned in 1966 and 2003.

Genclerbirligi have two Turkish Cups in their cupboard, having won the competition in 1987 and 2001.
