SPAL Rivalry

SPAL are based in Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna. Like most of the clubs in this region, they share fierce rivalries with one another. Since they were absent from Serie A for almost 50 years, SPAL don’t have huge rivalries with any Serie A club, except for Bologna, which is also based in Emilia-Romagna.

Instead, they are rivals with regional clubs with which they shared the pitch for the biggest part of their history. Apart from Bologna, SPAL regards Reggio Audace, Carpi and Modena as their rivals.

SPAL History

SPAL were founded in 1907, and they spent most of their history playing in the third tier of Italian football. Their best Serie A finish was the fifth place in 1959/60 season and they also played the final of Italian Cup two years later. SPAL failed to win a major domestic or international title, but they won one Serie C Cup and the Cup of Italian-Swiss friendship.

In the 1920s, club played in the top tier of Italian football, but apart from staying in the league for several consecutive years, they didn’t fight for trophies. After the relegation to Serie B and then Serie C, SPAL failed to return to Serie A until 1950s. The club played in 16 out of 17 Serie A championships from 1951 to 1968, and that’s regarded as a golden period of the club. During those years, SPAL launched many young players to stardom, most notably Fabio Capello.

In the 21st century, SPAL survived two bankruptcies, like many other Italian clubs. In 2012/13 season they even played in Serie D, which makes their recent run to Serie A even more impressive.
