Allsvenskan History and General Info

Allsvesnskan, which translates to The All-Swedish, is the top-level league for men’s association football clubs in Sweden. It is also sometimes referred to as Fotbollsallsvenskan, meaning the Football All-Swedish.

The UEFA system of league coefficients ranks the Allsvenskan as the 20th best top-tier national football league in Europe, based on performances in European competitions over the past five years. This makes it the second-best league in Scandinavia, after the Danish Superliga in the 16th place.

It was founded in 1924 under the same name, and remains one of the precious few football leagues in Europe that haven’t really changed names or formats in all that time. However, it did have a sort of predecessor in the form of Svenska Serien - the Swedish Series. The Series was divided into the southern and northern group and lasted between 1910 and 1924.

Eventually, the Allsvenskan consolidated all of the best football teams into a single, unified league. Despite being the highest leagues in the country, however, neither the Series nor the Allsvenksan were initially used to decide the title of Swedish Champions. That distinction only came about in 1931, before which the honour went to the Mästerskapet football cup.

It should be noted, however, that during these first decades large parts of Sweden were not allowed to put up their best teams for participation in these competitions. For instance, only teams from Stockholm and Gothenburg originally participated in the Cup, and teams from the island of Gotland and the Norrland region were only allowed into Allsvenskan in the 1930s. As such, whether these early years should be used for determining things like the teams’ total number of titles is still debatable.

Seasons run between spring and fall, usually from late Match or early April to the beginning of November. The league consists of 16 of Sweden’s best professional football teams. Each of these themes plays against every other team twice – once away, and once on their home turf. This results in 30 matches per team throughout the season, or 240 matches total.

The teams are then ranked using a point system in which every game win earns a team 3 points and a draw earns 1 point. The two lowest-ranked teams are relegated to the Superettan, or “the super one” league – which is Sweden’s second-tier football league. Conversely, the two best-placed teams from the Superettan are promoted to replace them.

Additionally, the third lowest team in Allsvenskan has to play a one-off relegation play-off against the third-best team from Superettan.

The team with the most points at the end of a season are crowned Swedish Champions and instantly qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Additionally, they are awarded a gold medal. The runners-up and the team in the third spot qualify for the Europa League, along with the winners of the Swedish Cup, and are awarded the Large Silver and Small Silver medals respectively.

Malmo FF currently boast the biggest number of titles over the years, with 23 league victories to their name. Also, they have the record of most consecutive seasons, with 63 consecutive participations between 1936 and 1999. The honour of most participations, however, goes to AIK Fotboll, with 91 total seasons and 6 titles.

Other notable clubs include IFK Goteburg with 13 titles over 87 seasons, IFK Norrkoping with 13 titles over 79 seasons, Helsingborgs IF with 7 titles over 67 seasons, Djurgårdens IF with 7 titles over 64 seasons, and IF Elfsborg with 7 titles over 67 seasons.

Allsvenksan’s overall top scorer is Sven Jonasson, who scored 252 goals playing got Elfsboerg between 1927 and 1941. The record for most appearances, though, is held by Sven Andersson –a goalkeeper who made 431 appearances during his career.
