Traditionally, Lille are considered to be this club’s greatest rivals. This showdown is dubbed the Derby du Nord or the Northern Derby. Interestingly, only Lille belong to the Nord department within France, but the regional rivalry dates back to the time before French football was unified under a single national league. Still, the two cities are only 25 miles apart.
As is often the case in such derbies, there is a certain social and cultural background. Lens is generally considered an old, working-class city compared to Lille’s middle-class, international population.
Le Racing Club de Lens was founded way back in 1906 by football-loving students. Their original colours were green and black – which can still be seen on their away kits.
Even today’s colours, red and gold, are connected to the coal mines which were abundant in the region. This became an issue in the 50s and 60s – the mines started closing and most of the players at the time were miners. Nevertheless, Lens went on to record several successful campaigns during the time, solidifying their position at the top of French football.
Their biggest successes to date, however, were during the ‘90s. They became finalists and semi-finalists I in the French cup several years in a row, finally winning the tournament in 1999. They can also boast one championship title from the 1997/98 season.
