The Swabians are one of the many clubs in Germany’s top flight who can boast a rivalry with Bayern Munich. Both of these clubs are known for being from the country’s south, but their inter-regional derby is seen as the showdown between Bavaria and Swabia. The duels are not nearly as heated as they once were, but the rivalry persists.
Closer to home, the Reds also have a regional football rivalry with Karlsruher SC. SC Freiburg are also commonly named as Stuttgart’s opposition in what is called the Baden-Schwaben-Derby, or Baden-Swabia inter-regional derby.
Lastly, they share a local rivalry with Stuttgart’s other football club – the Stuttgarter Kickers. Obviously, these two teams play on very different levels, so the derbies are one-sided and don’t happen often.
Founded in 1893, The Reds are one of Germany’s oldest and most reputable association football clubs. Though their current state is a far cry from the dominating position they held back in the day, they can boast 5 national championships and some notable international successes. Besides, they are structurally an enormous organisation with a respected football academy and a second team. In fact, the Stuttgart U19 team won the national junior championships 10 times – more than any other team in the country.
As soon as the German football league system unified into in the 50s, Stuttgart came into the top flight and have remained there ever since. The only exceptions to this are a short stint in the 2nd Bundesliga division in the mid-70s and their most recent fall from grace.
Their home turf is on the massive Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart. Their kits have changed quite a bit over the years, but are currently white with a horizontal red stripe.
