LoL betting intro
LoL’s huge popularity following its release in 2009 came right at the time when esports was truly taking off. Some even say that LoL, along with some of its biggest competitors such as Dota 2, is one of the video game titles that caused the boom in esports, and weren't merely lucky enough to be released at a convenient time. Whichever the case, the game remains one of the most popular competitive games on the planet. It also remains one of the world’s biggest esports – meaning it’s home to one of the most vibrant esports betting communities out there.
So, are you a long-time fan of professional League of Legends tho wants to try their hand at some online betting? Or are you a seasoned punter looking to switch things up with something different? Either way, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll be taking a look at the basics of LoL betting. We’ll start with a simple guide to League of Legends betting and look at some basic markets, tips, and strategies.
How to Bet on League of Legends
If you’re a complete newbie to online sports betting – don’t worry. We’ll start with the most basic steps here. On the other hand, if you’ve already got some experience under your belt, you might want to keep reading anyway to see how eSports betting is different.
First of all, you’ll need a sportsbook that offers League of Legends betting fixtures. Thankfully, Lol is one of the most popular esports right now, so you have a lot of choices. Picking the right one is a very important decision, and we’ll discuss it in detail a bit further down.
The Basic Procedure
For now, let’s assume you’ve picked a bookie and gone through the registration process. First of all, you’ll need to deposit some funds to bet with. This is an important consideration, and you should know the payment method you wish to use because it is one of the deciding factors for choosing a bookie to fit your needs. Options include credit/debit cards, e-wallets such as Skrill, Neteller and PayPal, and even cryptocurrencies.
Alternatively, League of Legends betting with skins is another option. In-game skins are almost a status symbol among LoL fans in some cases and are a big part of the game. With that in mind, this is another legitimate route to take. Although, you will have to find a betting site which offers this kind of service. Most of the bookies we talk about on Betting Fellow are licenced, legit gambling companies and only accept currencies, so you’ll have to do some digging on your own. Also, keep in mind that, while all League of Legends skins do have an equivalent value in real-life money, making profits from LoL betting this way is hard to do. You could resell them later in exchange for money, but we won’t be dealing with this in our League of Legends betting guide.
League of Legends Types of Bets
Alright, now all that is left is to find the bet you want to make. Before going any further, you will need to fully understand the concept of betting odds. You can find detailed information on how this work on our home page, under the “Sports Betting Odds” section. While you’re there, you might also want to take a look at the section on bookmaker margins, so you can better understand why some bookies offer better odds than others. One option is to use one of Betting Fellow’s League of Legends betting tips. We would suggest this because making accurate League of Legends bet predictions is harder than it might seem. Firstly, resources are much harder to find. Secondly, team forms are much less consistent than in, say, football. LoL team lineups change much more frequently, so guessing which team is stronger has to be based on its players. This approach has a lot of problems, but getting too deeply into that is beyond the scope of this simple guide.
Now, when it comes to League of Legends, there are several common markets found on most of today’s top sportsbooks. Essentially, markets are what you’re predicting will or won’t happen; what you’re betting will happen. We’ll take a look at the basic ones now that you’ll be sure to come across, covering the basics as well as some elementary League of Legends betting strategies.
Match Winner
This is the most straightforward type of LoL bet, and probably the one you’ll be using the most. It’s probably the first thing that pops into your mind when you say betting: you’re just predicting who is going to win. If the team you backed wins the match, your bet is successful.
In cases where matches are “Best of X”, you’re not concerned with individual games or maps. As long as your team has more wins at the end of the matchup than their opponents, you’re good to go.
Correct Score
In sports betting, this market is used for predicting the exact score of each team at the end of a game. This is exceptionally hard to do right but is slightly easier for LoL bets.
So, how does Correct Score betting work for League of Legends? No, you’re not predicting the number of kills. Instead, you’ll try to predict how many maps or games each team will win for the matchup. For example, in a Best of 3 match, you can bet on a score of 2:1, predicting that team A will win 2 games, and team 2 will win 1.
This means that regular LCS matches cannot be bet on for Correct Score, because they only consist of one game. You need the event’s format to be either Best of 3 or Best of 5.
Over/Under Markets
Over/Under markets work similarly to Correct Score, only they attempt to predict the number of games that will take place. For instance, Over 2.5 means that you’re predicting that there will be at least 3 games played total. In a Best of 3 format, matches can end after just 2 games, which is why this market exists.
Conversely, you could go for an Under 2.5 and hope that there will not be a third game. It’s important to note that this 2.5 line is not constant: there are markets for Over/Under 1.5, Over/Under 3.5, etc.
LoL tournament winner betting
One of the biggest advantages to League of Legends betting compared to other esports is the sheer number of tournaments that happen yearly. While Dota 2 may have bigger prize pools and sponsorships, LoL tournaments are much more frequent.
This type of bet is usually known as an “outright” among sports bettors. This type of bet is made before the start of a competition (or during it, although the odds are affected in such a case), and is all about predicting the ultimate winner of the whole event. All you have to do is predict which team will take home the prize.
If this sounds hard – that’s because it is. Major tournaments have dozens of teams competing, and any of them can finish. Sure, there are favourites, but it is very hard to tell who will win because many games have a lot of variables. As such, predicting that even the strongest team will win usually has great returns.
Handicap Betting
Handicap betting is a slightly more difficult concept to understand, and we recommend checking out this page on Asian Handicaps if you need more detailed information.
Handicaps in League of Legends betting are applied to the number of games a team won in the matchup. This means that they are also only applicable to matches with a “Best of X” format.
We would also like to point out that there are more League of Legends betting markets out there. The exact number depends on the bookmaker, and these are just the most common ones.
Choosing an online bookmaker for League of Legends Betting
The first step on your esports wagering career would be to find a good, trustworthy online bookmaker. If looking for a new betting site is still a step you need to take, you’re in luck. BettingFellow is, in good part, dedicated to reviewing and comparing the world’s top online bookmakers. Our page with about the best esports betting sites might be a good place to start your search.
Essentially, your options are to go with either a large industry heavy-hitter which supports esports betting or a specialized esports betting site. Both options have some pros and cons, and we’ll go through some of them.
An established betting site with eSports
The advantages here are that you would have your pick of some of the top betting sites in the huge, extremely competitive world of online sports betting. This comes with its own set of privileges, such as: Big sites often boast excellent odds which allow for better profits.
Better promotions because a site with a huge customer base can afford to make smaller profits per user.
Such bookies are much easier to trust because they have long histories and good reputations.
However, there are also some downsides to taking this route. Firstly, such sites all have esports betting offers as a side attraction at best. As such, the odds might not be as good simply because the bookie doesn’t devote enough time and attention to such relatively niche categories such as League of Legends. Furthermore, those great promotions might not even apply to League of Legends bets. Essentially, you want to be careful not to pick a site that is otherwise great, just not great for esports fans.
Specialized Esports Betting Sites
As online betting on esports grew in popularity, online sportsbooks solely dedicated to this emerging trend started popping up. These are usually smaller, but much more focused on catering to esports fans.
Advantages of taking this route include
- Better coverage of smaller esports events.
- A bigger variety of markets and more attention is given to every single event.
- Promotions that are strictly for esports bettors.
- Innovations in the field of esports betting.
However, there are some disadvantages to such bookies as well:
disadvantages to such bookies as well
- Most of these sites haven’t been around for a long time and don’t have a reputation
- Esports betting is still poorly defined in legislation, and many such sites do not have proper licences as legal gambling businesses.
- May have more limited resources, resulting in fewer special features, promotions, payment methods etc
The Best League of Legends Betting Sites
As you can see, choosing a bookie takes effort and usually research. To help you out, BettingFellow has made this top LoL betting sites list. These bookies, in our opinion, offer the best terms for LoL wagers, based on a verity of factors. We took into account reputation, odds, but also the number of markets and events you can bet on.
Best League of Legends Events for Betting
To close off, we’ll leave you with some suggestions on which event might be good to kick off your punting career.
League of Legends World Championship.
The most popular event in the entire esports industry, this tournament sees some of the biggest teams clash for LoL’s most prestigious title. This popularity means that there’s a lot of great League of Legends betting tips out there, making it a good choice for beginners.
League of Legends Championship Series.
This is a more traditional league-type competition, meaning you have matches to bet on throughout the year.
League of Legends European Championship.
Pretty much the same as above, only for the best European teams.
League of Legends Midseason Invitational.
Possibly the second-largest event of its kind, right after the World Championship. Only 14 teams compete in this tournament, meaning it is reserved for only the best.
