What is Double Chance Betting?
Let’s start with the basics. To get the best picture, start by thinking about the most typical football bet that attempts to predict the end result of a match. There are always three possible results for any match: a Home Win, an Away Win, or a Draw. Traditionally, you would attempt to predict which one of these would be the final result.
Given that there are three of them, that’s an inherent 33% chance of you being correct. Of course, this doesn’t take into account the teams, the favourites, and a thousand other important factors that decide what the actual betting odds are. Still, let’s keep in mind that we’re hoping for one result out of a possible three.
Now, with Double Chance betting, you’re basically doubling your chances by predicting two possible results. Of course, a match can’t be both a Draw and a Home Win, so any one of the two you put on your betting tip will suffice, and it doesn’t matter which one it is. Essentially, the only way for you to lose such a bet is if the third option, the only one you didn’t select, happens.
This substantially increases the probability of you winning, as you might have guessed. As a result, it will affect the betting odds involved. However, there’s a lot more to it than that, once you get down to the numbers. Keep reading for more information about Double Chance betting.
Also note: A lot of sport have the three-way result system. However, it is in football that all three outcomes occur commonly. Moreover, since football betting is by far the most popular, we’ll be sticking to it for most of our examples and such.
Why Bet on Double Chance?
There are several pros and cons to Double Chance betting, and most of them will probably be apparent from the get-go. Still, let’s go over some of them and elaborate further.
If a classic 1X2 bet gives you a baseline of 33% chance to win, a Double Chance bet brings this up to an amazing 66%. As previously mentioned, this is far from your true odds, but it serves to illustrate just how “safe” a Double Chance is, statistically speaking.
However, the logical consequence of this is that the betting odds are much shorter as well. This means that the potential winnings on a Double Chance bet are not great. You are not likely to greatly increase your stake by using this type of betting, at least not quickly.
We do like to point out, however, that both betting theory and experienced bettors stress that low-risk, low-reward wagers are a much better option for long-term profits. You won’t get the rush of that Big Score, but you’re much more likely to come out on top at the end of the month.
Double Chance is also a great way to reasonably back the underdog for once. We all like cheering for them, but betting on them is generally not a great idea. However, if you add the possibility of a draw into the equation, things start to look better. We’ll go more into this statement later, in our How to Choose Matches to Bet on Double Chance section.
Identifying value is a relatively easy task for Double Chance. Which team is more likely to win is easy enough to spot.
One question often arises for Double Chance: wouldn’t it be more profitable to just bet two separate bets? Well, it does happen. This depends on the odds the bookmaker is offering. Occasionally, placing two separate bets can indeed be better than a Double Chance bet. Make sure to check this before placing your Double Chance tip.
How to Bet on Double Chance?
Since there are three possible endings to a match, there are three possible combinations. They are as follows:- Option 1: Home Win & Draw
- Option 2: Away Win & Home Win
- Option 3: Away Win & Draw
Let’s just start off by saying that the second option, the one predicting either of the two teams will win, is not really worth your attention. Draws don’t happen that often after all, so you’re just betting that something that’s extremely likely to happen – will happen. No self-respecting bookmaker will offer any kind of odds worth paying attention to for this.
So that leaves us with two options. The most important thing to take into account here is which of the two teams is more likely to win – which is the favourite. The balance between the two teams is probably the most important factor when deciding which matches to bet on Double Chance.
How to Choose Matches to Bet on Double Chance?
So, between the two viable options, you could bet that the stronger team will win or draw, or that the underdog will win or draw.
The former does not make a lot of sense when you think about it. The odds for betting on favourites are very short as it is, and you would just be making them even worse. The only benefit to be found here is a little leeway if the favoured team doesn’t perform as well as you might expect, but the decrease for possible payouts is rarely worth it. If you strongly believe a team will win, just take the straight Win bet and be done with it.
Which brings us to our next option – the underdogs. We’ve talked at length that high-risk bets with high odds are statistically kind of bad, but Double Chance bets can make use of them anyway. Think of it this way: major upsets rarely happen in reality. Low-ranking teams rarely win against far stronger opposition. However, great teams simply not playing their best quite often results in a draw where one would have expected a sweeping victory. Just try and remember all the times you were let down when the team you were certain was going to win, ended up going 0-0 after a boring slog of a game.
Basically, betting against the odds is where Double Chance betting truly shines. What you’re essentially doing is picking two possible results that are less likely to happen than the third one – but there’s still two of them.

Double Chance Betting Tips
The basic strategy for Double Chance betting has already been explained in this guide. However, if you still want to know more, here are some handy tips for Double Chance betting. They include things to pay attention to as well as some general advice.
We’ve pointed out that riskier options make more sense for this market. However, going for the safer side is a great idea for accumulators. The multiplied winnings negate the short odds, and the added safety of Double Chance helps with the risky nature of accumulators.
Asian handicaps are also complementary with Double Chance betting. Combining the two can greatly increase long-term profitability.
If you’re betting for the underdog, try to identify any side factors which might impact the favourite’s performance. In an ideal scenario, you want them to be a generally strong team that happens to underperform for this one particular match, allowing the underdog to draw out the game or maybe even win it. These can include:
- Being the Away team
- Key players missing
- Lack of motivation, due to the match being unimportant
- Try to also find cases where the favoured team is defensively oriented. These are more likely to end up with a draw even against weaker opposition.
- Look for other factors that might hinder them as well, such as bad turf and/or weather conditions.
Double Chance Betting Variations
Double chance can safely be considered a variation in its own right. It’s basically the classic “Win-Draw-Win” bet, only you’re picking two options. It should be pointed out that just betting on the match to draw can achieve much of what Double Chance bets are used for, especially with some Asian handicaps thrown in.
Still, Double Chance adds a much-needed level of security to your bet.
However, there are some options and alternatives. The most obvious one is the so-called “Draw No Bet”. This basically just means that the bookmaker gives you back your stake if the match ends in a draw. It shares some principles with Double Chance, but is often used for a completely different purpose.
Remember how we talked about underdogs managing to scrape up an unexpected draw more often than an upsetting win? Well, Draw No Bet is used when you’re betting on the favourite and don’t want this to happen at your expanse. From the perspective of how it’s used, it’s the complete opposite of Double Chance.
